Jessica’s journey to finding a workplace designed for life

Meet Jessica, a Junior Account Executive on ourLocal Sales team. In August 2022, Jessica began her#FiveStarCareerjourney, and she is sharing a look into what her first year at Yelp has taught her so far.

Tell us about your journey at Yelp

Before coming to Yelp, I worked in an office with a two-hour commute. I am a mom of three plus a bonus daughter, and after giving birth to my youngest son in May 2022, I knew I had tomake a change. I wanted to find a job that allowed me to be an active part of my children’s lives. I have been a Yelp user for a very long time, and I have a background in retail sales, so when I came across a listing for a Yelp job opening, a lightbulb clicked in my head!

I decided to apply for the remote Inside Sales Representative role and the rest is history! I am now a Junior Account Executive and the work-life balance that Yelp has given me is amazing. I can send my kids off to school in the morning and be at home when they return. Instead of spending hours of my day commuting to and from an office, I am able to be around for all of my youngest son’s milestones – from his first words to his first steps, which are things that I would have missed out on.

As I look back on this first year, I am so grateful for the experience of being a part of a company that strives to not only connect people with great local businesses, but one that is committed to its employees. I am so grateful to be part of an amazing team, and I look forward to my future here!

What is something that surprised you about working at Yelp?

I was surprised by the team camaraderie and how willing everyone always is to lend a helping hand or ear.

How has working in sales helped you grow personally?

Working in outbound sales has helped me to become a more confident person all around. It has shown me that life is all about trusting the process. You won’t always get a yes, but when you do, it will be sweet as honey and worth all of the work that you put into it. I strive to be the best version of myself every day.

What is your favorite part of the work you do here?

It is so rewarding to hear a business owner thank me at the end of a call for helping them on their road to success using our product.

What are your tips for handling a tough day in sales?

My tip for handling a tough day in sales is to maintain an “onto the next” mentality. It’s easy to get into your own head in sales, so it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, you are just having a conversation with a business owner. One day can’t break you, but it definitely can make you in sales. My manager says it best: “It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when!”
