Meet Jara, a Community Manager on the@YelpCentralCoastteam! Before finding her#FiveStarCareerat Yelp two years ago, Jara spent 10 years working as an emergency room nurse.
Why did you want to work at Yelp, and why do you continue to choose Yelp every day?
I wanted to work at Yelp because I wanted to help build a space to connect people with great local businesses and help their vibrant stories shine. On a personal level, I have been a transplant in my community. After joining Yelp, I saw how welcoming and warm the Yelp community is, and I found pockets of light and met people with common interests. I love that Yelp values our professional and personal lives. We have access to benefits and resources that weren’t even available to me working as an emergency room nurse. I’m a big advocate of mental health and decreasing the stigma around it, and I love that Yelp is aligned with those goals.
What does a typical day look like as a Community Manager?
I’m an early riser, so my morning consists of either surfing, a spin class, or pilates. I then wash up at home and send my little one off to school before logging into work. My typical workday consists of connecting with my community members and visiting business owners to learn about their unique stories. They always inspire me for my next event!
Tell us about a moment when you felt connected to Yelp’s mission
Yelp gives me the space to be authentic and root for the underdog. I immigrated to the United States 13 years ago, and I felt so insecure. So many of us have the same story, and there is something about finding an accepting community with shared values and interests that feels like home.
I recently managed my metro’s first Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) campaign, and I could not have been more proud that there were so many Yelpers willing to take that journey with me. We enjoyed amazing food and heard the stories of inspiring business owners, and it made our community that much better.
