Black History Month is a time when we celebrate all of the accomplishments African Americans achieved. In honor of that, we highlighted a few incredible Black-owned businesses that help contribute to Houston’s success.
Indigo– Northside
Just under 30-years-old, Chef Jonathan “Jonny” Rhodes’s culinary vision has earned praise fromGQ,Food & Wine, and in 2019, Indigo landed onTimemagazine’s “World’s Greatest Places, 100 Destinations to Experience Right Now.” The restaurant’s neo-soul food tasting menus offers diners an extraordinary lesson in African-American and indigenous people’s history, and the culinary and educational experience is meant to provoke conversations.

The Tipping Point– Downtown
Since 2007, The Tipping Point offers a highly curated selection of sneakers, apparel, books, music, and art for creative-types and early adopters. Drop in for some retail therapy, or check out one of their special events, such as book signings and film screenings.

Lucille’s– Museum District
Brothers Ben and Chris Williams honor their great-grandmother Lucille B. Smith’s culinary and entrepreneurial legacy at the namesake restaurant. The menu features some of Smith’s claim-to-fame recipes – the chili biscuits were a known favorite of President Roosevelt – paired with the innovative creations of Le Cordon Blue trained Chef Chris Williams. It’s Southern comfort food to experience!

伯恩斯原始烧烤– Acres Homes
The legendary barbecue joint, founded by the late Roy Burns, has been a Houston institution since the 1980s. Still family-owned and operated, their fanbase now spans the globe after receiving a nod from Anthony Bourdain in the 2017 “Parts Unknown” episode of Houston. Simply Scents Candle Co.– Museum District
Houston-native Shanquita Greggs used her final paycheck as a flight attendant to fund her own candle company. From making candles in the family kitchen to selling them from the trunk of her car, Gregg now sells her products in-store, online, and at select Walgreen’s locations.

Green Seed Vegan– Museum District
From food truck to brick-and-mortar restaurant, their menu attracts both vegans and non-vegans – and also praises fromFood & Wine, naming it one of the top 20 vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the US.
