On your way out of San Antonio, stop by the Guenther House for brunch and tour the beautifully restored home of the Pioneer Flour Mills’ founding family. Yelpers recommend the chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy.

National Historic District, Fredericksburg, TX

Roughly 25 minutes off the interstate, stretch your legs and take a walking tour of the National Historic District of Fredericksburg, TX. On your stroll you’ll see dozens of adorable Sunday Houses, which once served as weekend homes for German immigrants who lived outside the city during their trips to town for church and trading. Stop by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce to pick up a printed map outlining the self guided tour.

Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Davis, TX

About 40 minutes from the interstate you will discover Fort Davis National Historic Site, one of the best surviving examples of a frontier military post in the Southwest. Check out the museum and take a self-guided tour of the grounds, walking through ruins, restored buildings and even hiking trails.

By now you’ve worked up an appetite with all your historical exploring, but you won’t be disappointed with this dinner destination! One of El Paso’s most famous restaurants, L & J Cafe serves up real deal Mexican food. It’s located next to a cemetery so you can expect scary stories and urban legends to accompany those green chile chicken enchiladas.
